6th annual ‘Derby4Dogs’ to hold virtual race this weekend

A puppy race is just what you need to see this weekend.

A puppy race is just what you need to see this weekend.

Disappointed that you are missing the most exciting two minutes in racing this year? Here is a perfect excuse to wear your derby hats in the name of cuteness.

The 6th annual Derby4Dogs fundraiser is still happening, but with a few changes, thanks to Covid-19.  Organizers from Paws4People decided the best way to keep their event going was to bring the racing puppies straight to your home.

“Many activities of our program can now be enjoyed at home like the Online Auction and best Derby Bow Tie & Hat contest,” said Derby4Dogs chair, Maureen Lewis.

Paws4People trains and places Assistance Dogs for Veterans and children with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities. To date, the organization has placed over 850 dogs in 23 states.

“Still being able to do something and having our sponsors and our donors to back us no matter what we decided to do was really nice to hear,” said Sam Cleary, director of puppy development at Paws4people. “We are so grateful for their support so we could still put something on the people can enjoy from the comfort of their own home.”

The festivities start at 12 p.m. Saturday, May 2, with the Assistance Puppies-in- Training live in the paddock, and culminating with the live puppy derby at 4:30 p.m.

This year’s puppy competitors, Charlie, Gray, Schultz, Schroeder, and Snoopy all share a “Peanuts” theme to their name.

“We know that this “sporting” event will bring some fun and joy into people’s homes as we all continue to hunker down this Spring and try to flatten the curve,” added Lewis.”

Virtual derby-goers can take part in an online silent auction and win prizes by sharing their best derby dress on Facebook or Instagram using “#derby4dogs”

Lewis said a link will be posted closer to the live event on the Derby4Dogs Facebook page.
