Tony and Cindy Fontana opened up Bandana’s Restaurant and Grill in Burgaw in 2010. They love everything about it, but their favorite part, is the people.
Tony comes from a family of chefs and restaurant owners, so it only seemed natural for him to follow in their footsteps.
Before the restaurant, Tony was working for a building supply company and Cindy was a retired principal at Burgaw Elementary School.
The couple would cook for friends and neighbors every Sunday and loved entertaining.
They said one of the neighbor’s kids would call them the “Bandanas” whenever they would show up to the party.
“Instead of Fontana’s, she said ‘Bandanas’, so it stuck,” Cindy said. “I said ‘if we ever have a restaurant, we’ll call it ‘Bandanas’,” Tony said.
It’s an All-American restaurant. They serve steaks, seafood, burgers, BBQ, chicken, pizza, sandwiches, and just about every other American food you can think of.
Tony was born in Burgaw in 1959 and Cindy moved to the area in 1994 but they both share the same enormous amount of love for the area.
One of their favorite memories from the restaurant was how everyone came together to help them in a time of need.
“One of our children, she was in a bad accident with she was three,” Cindy said. “I’ll never forget that night, it was packed, it was a Friday night. And when we walked in and of course I was crying and sobbing. The whole restaurant was right there and came up to us and said, “What do you need? We’re here for you.”
Cindy and Tony said they were amazed by the generosity.
“And that just solidifies who we are and what we are as a community,” Cindy added.
