This year Custom Home Furniture Galleries is celebrating their 25th year in business. The furniture store has come a long way and seen all sorts of different trends over the years. We sat down with the stores owners to talk about what it’s been like running the business over the past two and a half decades.
What was the biggest challenge you felt you had to overcome?
John Gray: Biggest challenge we’ve had to overcome has been just growth. We’ve grown year over year for 25 years and just managing our inventory, and our staff and making sure we’re prepared to meet and greet the customers everyday and provide the service and the products that they’re interested in.
Furniture has changed a lot in 25 years. How do you stay ahead of the trends and keep up with the changes?
Kevin Gray: We’re constantly going to furniture markets at least twice a year. The international furniture market in High Point, North Carolina. You get ahead of all the trends. You see what’s going on. New colors, patterns, textures. We purchase for the next season and make sure we’re on trend with everything’s that popular out there right now and what the consumers want.
In the furniture world, trends come and go. What is one trend you never want to see again?
John Gray: I never want to see a collage sofa again. Multiple fabrics on one sofa. Multiple fabrics on the same sofa never looks good no matter what you do. Especially when they end up looking like a patch work quilt. It wasn’t pretty. But we did sell a lot of them.
Kevin Gray: Probably one trend I never want to see again is plaid. When I started in the business 30 something years ago, we had plaid sofas. And uh, I don’t think I ever want to see those come back again.
What has been your favorite memory from the business over the past 25 years?
Kevin Gray: My favorite memory over the last 25 years has been all the customers. A lot of them become friends. It’s been great meeting them, it’s been great interacting with them and enjoying them and making sure that they are happy with their purchase and that they’ve had a good experience, they love their home after their done.
John Gray: Probably just the customers that I’ve seen from the beginning. They’ve continued to shop with us and we’ve made friends and it’s nice seeing how the families have grown and they continue to be loyal to us and we appreciate their business and appreciate seeing them in the store all the time.
