Discover a newfound respect for hospice patients with the Compassionate Lab

You can now feel the effects of some of the diseases your grandparents may have with Lower Cape Fear Hospice’s Compassionate Lab.

You can now feel the effects of some of the diseases your grandparents may have with Lower Cape Fear Hospice’s Compassionate Lab.

The lab is comprised of a series of simulations of different diseases common among older people. Through the simulations, participants in the lab get to experience first hand what some of those  diseases actually feel like.

Some of the simulated diseases include cataracts, Macular Degeneration, COPD, diseases related to nerve damage and more.

Kelly Cahill, RN, CHPN, a nurse with Lower Cape Fear Hospice, runs the lab. She said some of these diseases have affected people in her family.

“I did not have nearly the idea of what they had been going through and it [the compassionate lab] has certainly helped me to be more patient and understanding when I’m in the line at Walmart and somebody’s fumbling with coins or they can’t see their check book,” Cahill said. “It certainly just really increases your patience level and your empathy for others.”

Lower Cape Fear Hospice travels around Southeastern North Carolina with the lab. To book your Compassionate Lab experience you can reach out to 800-733-1476 or visit lcfh.org.
