Built-ins are a popular trend in new construction homes on the market today and are seen as the focal point of your home. But sometimes you just don’t know where to start when it comes to styling them.

Courtney Salyer with Custom Home Staging & Design is here to give you some pro tips on how to go about styling and personalizing your built-ins to compliment the theme of your home.

Sayler says there are no real rules when it comes to styling your built-ins, however it is recommended that you stick to three main design elements:

1. Incorporate texture
2. Incorporate balance
3. Don’t over-style

One tip Salyer gives as a way to incorporate texture is to add old books with covers removed.

“It’s a really inexpensive and beautiful way to add texture, and it give items height.”

To incorporate balance, Salyer says not to be intimidated to adjust the shelves.

“By removing the shelves and giving them different heights, you can now incorporate various size
elements like vases, plants, and more.”

When it comes to not over styling the built-ins, incorporate pieces as a way to be seen but not feel cluttered. Select a few items to feature and build around them.

To add some personalization to the built-ins and ultimately the home, picture frames of your family are the way to go.

Aside from the accessories, a way to incorporate a pop of color in the built-ins is to add greenery.

“That brings color, as well as texture, and just a little life to the space,” Salyer says.
