How to spin a basketball on the tip of your finger like a Harlem Globetrotter

The Harlem Globetrotters are making their way back to the Cape Fear region this Friday and one of the players, Orlando El Gato Melendez stopped by to make sure everyone who is planning on attending is prepared.

Melendez gave us his foolproof plan on how to do one of the Globetrotter’s signature moves of spinning a basketball on your fingertip.

Sure, the Globetrotters typically use more than one basketball because obviously that is more impressive. But you’ve got to start somewhere.

Here’s his tutorial.

Step 1.

Line up the lines on the basketball vertically in the palm of your writing hand.

Step 2.

Try to spin the ball with one hand by throwing it straight up out of your palm while spinning the ball. You will spin the ball to the right if it is in your left hand, and you will spin the ball left if it is in your right hand.

Step 3.

When the ball comes back down to your hand, straighten your pointer finger for it to land on. The trick is to make sure it lands on your nail. El Gato says the nail makes for a better spinning surface because it is a naturally smoother surface than your skin.

Step 4.

Impress all your friends and families with your new trick once you’ve mastered it.
