WILMINGTON, N.C. (CAPE FEAR WEEKEND) -
For the past five years seniors at Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall a retirement community would participate in an Olympic games. Residents would practice, and then compete in different activities like shuffle board, and corn hole. This fun event encouraged residents to be active and participate in healthy competition.
However, this year the top athletes from several retirement homes around North and South Carolina came together for two days of competition and fun. Athletes from seven different retirement communities competed in the following events: Cornhole, Bocce, Shuffleboard, Billiards, Seated Bowling, Lap Races, ½ Mile Walk Race, Water Balloon Drop and Toss, Trivia, Bridge, and Ping Pong.
Not only did this event encourage active, healthy lifestyles for the seniors it inspired pride in their communities in which they reside. Now more than ever it’s important for retirees to look for ways to grow their social connections and physical and mental health.
The energy at the Liberty games was exciting. The seniors were dressed in team uniforms and cheering on their teammates from the sidelines in each of the events. Some seniors spectated from the balcony and others danced and cheered on the sidelines. The memories that were made during these two days of competition are sure to be in the hearts of all involved.
