Professional Soccer could be coming to Wilmington.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (CAPE FEAR WEEKEND) -

Could Wilmington get a professional soccer team?

Planning has begun for a League one team in the Port City. League one is the third tier of professional soccer in the United States.

Late last evening USL (United Soccer League) League one announced USL had given rights to a newly formed ownership group rights for a League One expansion franchise in Wilmington. This franchise could potentially be in Wilmington by 2024.

Though plans are in the very early stages the group is hoping to build a stadium that would hold 4,500 fans and would create an area for retail, a beer garden and possibly even housing.

Would you love a professional soccer team in Wilmington? We will keep you updated as plans continue.
