Brunswick Town / Fort Anderson

As one of North Carolina’s State Historic Sites this old colonial port town sits right on the banks of the Cape Fear River. Walk the trails through the site and discover the story of the history of this colonial community with outdoor exhibits. The views are not to be missed. The visitor center features an audio-visual tour of Brunswick Town that is educational as well as fascinating.

Not only is it gorgeous to see the trees in the morning light you may recognize the grounds as they were the backdrop for several movies.

NC Maritime Museum at Southport

This museum sits right in the heart of Southport. It’s a great place for learning about the extensive Maritime history of the lower Cape Fear region. Discover exhibits on fisheries, shipwrecks, and military conflicts ranging from piracy to WWII. The museum is a great place to take a break from the sun and examine artifacts from years past. If you visit during late spring or early summer, you’ll be wowed by the beautiful hydrangeas on the grounds.

Museum of Coastal Carolina

The Museum of Coastal Carolina is a natural history museum located at Ocean Isle Beach in Brunswick County, North Carolina. Animal exhibits include an aquarium and a touch tank with live sea animals. The museum includes an walk through ocean reef diorama that includes life-sized models of whales, sharks, sea turtles and rays. It’s a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. They even have an exhibit where kids can color a fish and watch it populate on their ocean sea floor screen. There are several interactive exhibits to enjoy, and it’s a great place to foster a love for learning about science.

Ingram Planetarium

This Planetarium in Sunset Beach is a great activity when North Carolina’s temperamental weather isn’t cooperating. There’s an 85-seat SciDome Sky theater that shows a variety of entertaining and educational programs about space and astronomy. There’s also a great Science Hall to explore before and after the show with fun interactive exhibits. Thursday - Saturday they host laser music shows that are fun for the whole family.
