Night Tour of the Burgwin-Wright House

Latimer House Night Tour

Get a glimpse of actual Victorian living while taking a tour of the historic Latimer House at night. With the aid of interpreters, experience the ambience of 19th-century gaslight (without electricity), learn about the background of that technology, how it functioned, and what it meant to people from all strata levels who lived and worked in its “lurid glow.” This tour is especially emotional because so many of the Latimer family’s original furnishings and artifacts are still in the house. There have been reports of supernatural encounters, albeit they are not guaranteed.

Gullah-Geechee Heritage with Ron Daise

The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra will highlight Wilmington’s role as the northern terminus of the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor with an appearance by celebrated story-teller singer Ron Daise, and conclude with a symphonic work by Florence Price, a Black composer whose music is enjoying a deserved revival. The concert will also feature winners of the 2022 Richard R. Deas Young Artists Concerto Competition.

VIP tickets are still available for the catered Artist Meet & Greet Reception on Monday night through February 3rd. Do you want to purchase a piece of art? The South Park creators’ irreverently funny Best Musical, winner of nine Tony Awards®, will have you giggling all night long. Follow two Latter-day Saints on their missionary adventure as they try to share the gospel with the locals of a remote Ugandan village. The people, who are preoccupied with more serious issues like HIV/AIDS, starvation, ritual mutilation, and the local warlord’s oppression, show no interest in the sincere young guys. Despite being a satire of Mormon doctrine and practices, the musical eventually affirms the virtues of love and selfless devotion.

Planet Ocean presents Dr. Maureen Raymo’s on The Climate Crisis, Where We Are, What We Can Do.

Maureen “Mo” Raymo’s research focuses on the history and causes of climate change in the past, including understanding the consequences of climate change for sea level and ice sheet stability in the future.

Dr. Raymo earned an undergraduate degree in geology at Brown University and two master’s degrees and a doctoral degree in geology from Columbia University.

Summon the Doctor! Common Ailments, Diseases and Remedies in Colonial America at Burgwin-Wright

Burgwin-Wright House, 224 Market St | 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM

The Burgwin-Wright House is pleased to welcome Charles Brett for a special presentation on Colonial Medicine.

Brett will explore the different medical occupations found in Colonial America, the common medical issues and diseases of the time, how medical practitioners were trained and treated patients, and what kind of remedies could be used in the 17th and 18th century. Brett will visit also invite guests to visit his Apothecary to discuss and demonstrate how medicinal recipes for some of the most common ailments were prepared and dispensed, what were some of the main ingredients used in medicinal recipes and what equipment was used in the preparation of these recipes.

Admission is free, a $10 donation to Burgwin-Wright is suggested. All money raised will go toward the preservation of the 1770 house and 1774 jail structures.

Living History: Battle of Forks Road Commemoration

Enjoy a day dedicated to remembering the Battle of Forks Road during Black History Month at the brand-new United States Colored Troops (USCT) Park. Discover the new battle-related wayfinding signs and the life-size statue Boundless, which honors the valor of the soldiers who battled for their freedom. On the grounds of the Cameron Art Museum (also the location of the Battle of Forks Road), there will be an encampment investigating the roles and effects of USCT and showcasing Civil War camp life with reenactors. Children and those who still have a sense of adventure can try on helmets, raise signal flags, use semaphore flags to “communicate,” tap out their names in Morse code, and more. All ages are guaranteed to be interested in this event. Enjoy the chance to have a private conversation with someone who has firsthand knowledge of what life was like on a battleship during World War II.

From Pier to Port, experience marathon running like never before. This thrilling race attracts a wide range of athletes from across the nation and has the extra benefit of being a Boston Marathon qualifier and a USATF certified qualifier. The complete marathon’s route begins early on Saturday in Wrightsville Beach’s Johnnie Mercers Pier, travels through Wilmington, and ends at Riverfront Park in the city’s historic core.
