“Who We Are: A Brief History of Lumbee History and Culture” with Kevin Melvin

About the Speaker
Kevin Melvin is an enrolled member of and Cultural Historic Preservation Officer for the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. He earned his undergraduate degree in American Indian Studies and History from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He is currently working on a master’s degree in Public History from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
He is a founding member of the Lumbee Stickball Association and a member of Phi Sigma Nu Fraternity Inc. His interests are Southeastern American Indian History and Culture, all things outdoors, and classic cars. When he is not working to preserve and promote Lumbee History and Culture, he is working on his family farm in Rowland, N.C. Melvin is married to LeAnn Strickland Melvin, with whom he shares two daughters, Lorelai Rose and Magnolia Lee.

Hidden Battleship Tour

Discover the Battleship’s unrestored areas on a special tour that gives you the chance to visit places that aren’t often accessible. Small groups with tour guides are used for the four-hour excursion. Visitors can tour the ship’s bow (officers’ country, boatswain locker, and descent to the bottom of the ship), third deck (Radio II, brig, after gyro, storage rooms, ammunition handling, Engineer’s office), Engine room #1, superstructure (Captain’s cabin, armored conning tower, maintenance shops), reefer, aft diesel, and ascend to the top of the ship through the fire control tower. Without the snakes, the tour brings out the “Indiana Jones” in each of us.
