License plate emojis are going to be a thing! Okay, so maybe Australia is the only place so far to have officially rolled out this offer, but we’re hoping it isn’t long before this offer hops across the pond! We know what you’re thinking – won’t this just open up the door for all kinds of new license plate innuendos? Fortunately (or unfortunately depending how you look at it), so far they’re only giving Aussie drivers five options: “laugh out loud”, “wink”, “sunglasses”, “heart eyes” or “smile”.
For AU$500 ($350 USD) Aussies can personalize their plates with this new decoration starting March 1.
Non-Australians won’t have to wait long to get your own dose of emoji. Emojipedia announced 230 new emojis for 2019, growing the official worldwide emoji list to over 2,600! New emojis are inducted by the Unicode Consortium, a group of computer software corporations and volunteers in Silicon Valley who give the thumbs up and thumbs down to emoji submissions. They decide based on how frequently they think the emoji will be used and how representative of the concept it is.
With interracial couples, service dogs, and manual or motorized wheelchair options, a lot of the new emojis promote inclusivity and represent a wider variety of people. (The orangutan, yo-yo and parachute might just be for fun). The O.G. emoji “laugh out loud” is still by far the most popular in the world.
While you may not be able to get any of the new emojis on a license plate anytime soon, we still think it’s always fun to punctuate with pictures 😊.
