NASA’s inviting you to go to Mars!

Okay maybe not YOU, but they’re letting people send their names! NASA’s Mars mission in July 2020 has over a million people sending their names along with it.  Submissions from around the world have been rocketing in, with over 200,000 from the United States alone.

The mission will launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, Earth and will land on the Jarezo Crater, Mars. According to NASA’s website, the mission “addresses high-priority science goals for Mars exploration, including key questions about the potential for life on Mars.”

Names will fly aboard the newest Mars 2020 rover, based on the Mars Science Laboratory’s Curiosity rover. About the size of the car, it weighs a little over two tons and will carry a drill for coring samples from Martian rocks and soil.

NASA’s Atlas V-541 rocket launches the rover July 17, 2020, and is due to land February 18, 2021, earning your name a whopping 313,586,649 frequent flyer miles. We’re not quite sure yet how to cash these in, but we’ll keep you posted!
