North Carolina’s first long awaited alpine coaster is now open, but non-locals are going to have to wait a little bit longer.
Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster opened to locals only and by reservation on May 9.
Due to COVID-19, only residents who live within 45 minutes of the coaster are allowed to reserve a ride right now.
“Once Phase 2 has been announced and we are given the go ahead to open fully we will make those announcements here and on our Facebook page,” the homepage of their website says.
In January they announced that they would open in February but due to weather affecting construction, they had to delay the opening.
If you’ve never heard of or seen an alpine coaster before, it’s described as “a type of roller coaster which uses a bobsled-like sled or cart to run down a track usually built on the side of a hill,” according to Wikipedia.
So basically, once you get to the top of the mountain, you just let gravity guide you down.
The track is 3,160 feet in total and each cart can go up to 27 mph.
Please drop any questions you may have below! Our website will be live this week! We expect to open MAY 8th!!!!
According to Romantic Asheville, it “descends through the forests via banked turns with baking controlled by the rider. The run has plenty of curves around boulders and trees for an exciting ride – complete with the latest safety technology.”
The coaster is located in Banner Elk, NC – a little over 70 miles from Asheville.
According to the Romantic Asheville article, there are only about 20 or so of these alpine coasters in the United States.
They gave an update in a live video on their Facebook page, assuring that they will be taking precautions due to COVID-19. They plan to wipe down the carts very time a rider gets off as well as making sure to enforce social distancing.
