What started as a friendly competition with her mom quickly turned into a new one-of-a-kind business for the Cape Fear region.

Around Christmas time in 2017, Kelly Burdoo wanted to one-up her mom’s famous (and admittedly) delicious Christmas cookies. But she wanted to do something a little different.

So she thought of marshmallows.

She looked up an Alton Brown recipe for marshmallows and so began her marshmallow-making journey.

Her first batch turned out okay, but she was determined to make it even better.

Burdoo and her daughter kept making batch after batch after batch until they had perfected their recipe.

At one point Burdoo’s brother said“you have to stop making them, or start selling them.”

Burdoo took her brothers advice and three months later Mallowdoos was born.

Burdoo sells her marshmallows at markets and they are in some shops around the Cape Fear.

But you can also buy any of her flavors online.

Speaking of flavors, she has about 40 of them.

Burdoo said any flavor that comes to mind, if she can successfully turn it into a marshmallow… She will.

Right now some of the flavors she offers are white chocolate cherry, birthday cake, key lime pie, blueberries and cream, strawberry lemonade, toasted coconut and chocolate, bourbon and vanilla bean, and even fireball, just to name a few.

Burdoo currently makes all of her product out of her home but she hopes to one day have a store front for the business somewhere in downtown Wilmington where people can get s’mores or drinks with her fresh, handmade marshmallows.
