Wilmington woman starts brewery bus tour business with her ’72 Volkswagen bus
You can now visit Wilmington area breweries in style thanks to one Wilmington woman’s latest business venture, Roadies Local.
Roadies Local, recently started by Rachel O’Holla, is a private brewery tour service featuring a 1972 Volkswagen bus. O’Holla bought the bus about three years ago with the goal of renovating it and turning it into this one-of-a-kind brewery bus for the Port City.
The idea came to her after a friend of hers started something similar in Cape May, New Jersey.
“I actually went on his tour a couple times and had such a fun time and really just thought it was something that would work out well here,” O’Holla said.
“Bessie,” as O’Holla calls the ’72 Volkswagen, has everything you would ever want in a trendy brewery tour bus service.
“We customized the interior ourselves,” O’Holla said. “We switched around the seating to make it more comfortable for private groups, put in a table, redid the floors, so it’s a lot of fun.”
The bus can seat up to seven people. O’Holla will pick you up from your location in Wilmington or the surrounding beaches (Wrightsville and Carolina), take your party to three breweries of your choice (in the Wilmington area, Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach), and then drop you back off at your pickup location once you’re done visiting the breweries.
In addition to a day out on the town, Roadies Local can also be used for Bachelor/Bachelorette parties, tailgating, concerts, or whatever occasion you may be celebrating.
O’Holla says her favorite part about this so far has been seeing other peoples reactions to Bessie.
“It’s one of those things where when people see the bus coming down the street, they just stop and smile and wave or ask questions,” she said. “It’s like spreading cheer around town when they see the bus.”
